I’m amazed, the plant kingdom is always reproducing itself. Red Button Ginger, named thus because of its lovely flower head that comes forth as a luscious red button, is one of the robust spiral gingers in the Costus family that has more than 100 species. The Red button Ginger’s white fruit produces black seeds, which are widely eaten and spread by birds. ![]() ![]() Here, because its in a pot, I’ve tied the stem to a rod. Red button ginger is best when planted in early spring or year-round in tropical climate zone. ![]() On her website, Food Timeline, she cited early recipes like Ginger Ale. In the wild, the flowering head will start to fall from the weight of its head, until it touches the ground, allowing the off-shoots at the head to form another plant. Red torch ginger, also known as Etlingera elatior, adds a colorful touch of the tropics to yards and ornamental gardens. The most common filling is red bean paste that is made from sweetened azuki beans. Like the costus, the red ginger plant also has a special way of renewal through its flower head. It has dark green and fuzzy ginger-like elliptic leaves that spiral up the slender cane-like stems to a height of 7.9 feet (2.4 m). I’ve enough off-shoots to start another pot. Costus barbatus is a perennial plant with a long red inflorescence that bears edible bright yellow tubular flowers. Chances of survival higher than if you try to root a cutting (without the off-shoots into the potting soil). The same off-shoots do grow even if you didnt dead-head the stem. Cut below the circle, and pot in garden soil. Two offshoots growing from a costus woodsonii cut (see roots forming from circle). When one costus woodsonii (also known as red button ginger or scarlet spiral flag) head became brown, I cut it off.
